History & Origin

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was the outcome of the six-year-long Assam Movement, which was spearheaded by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP) asking the central government to free Assam of several million illegal infiltrators from across the borders. For many years, the people of Assam were raising the demand for steps against the illegal foreign infiltrators who had entered the state of Assam through the porous border, mostly from Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and occupied vast areas of the state, thus threatening the economic, political, social and cultural existence of the indigenous people of the state.

Assam Accord

The Assam Accord (1985) was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between representatives of the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on 15 August 1985.[1][2] A six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants was launched by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in 1979. It culminated with the signing of the Assam Accord.
